Demonstration Alert: U.S. Embassy Beirut, Lebanon (January 28, 2021)

Location: Tripoli, Beirut, Saida, and throughout Lebanon

Event: Demonstrations have taken place in Tripoli, Beirut, Saida, and other locations in Lebanon since January 25, 2021.  These demonstrations have included tire burning, rock throwing, and the use of Molotov cocktails or other explosive devices, as well as road blockages.  The demonstrations have resulted in several hundred injuries and at least one fatality.  U.S. citizens should avoid demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests.

The Lebanese government has imposed a 24-hour curfew to combat the spread of COVID-19 until February 8.  Details of the lockdown, including the limited exceptions for travel during the lockdown, may be found here.

Actions to Take:

  • Monitor local media and our Embassy website for updatesand check your email for further alerts.
  • Avoid the area of demonstrations.
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities.
