America Provides $10 Million to UNICEF in Lebanon

During a ceremony today at the Ministry of Education, Ambassador Hale announced America’s contribution of $10 million to the United Nations Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) in Lebanon in order to enroll vulnerable school-aged children in public schools’ first shift. This assistance is part of America’s ongoing commitment to ensure all school-aged children in Lebanon have access to a high quality education, including those affected by the Syria crisis.

This assistance contributes to UNICEF’s Sustainable Learning Opportunities Program that supports the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) by ensuring school enrolment and retention for 24,000 or more vulnerable children for the 2015-2016 school year.  This project will be implemented country-wide and target students in Kindergarten to Grade 9 in the first shift.

This assistance is part of a larger commitment from international donors who are responding to Lebanon’s appeal for additional support to vulnerable communities affected by the Syria crisis.
