Today American Ambassador David Hale hosted a round table on human rights to mark the tenth anniversary of the assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Mr. Wael Kheir, founder of the Foundation for Human and Humanitarian Rights, led the discussion with Ambassador Hale.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Hale underlined the U.S. Embassy’s collaboration with government and civil society partners in Lebanon on many human rights issues, including women’s empowerment, freedom of expression, opposing human trafficking, building partnerships with the judiciary, advancing LGBT rights, and working to counter violent extremism. Ambassador Hale emphasized the universality of human rights. He noted that this anniversary is an opportunity to reflect upon the importance of accountability and justice. Members of Lebanon’s civil society participated in a lively discussion with the hosts.
