Today American Ambassador David Hale participated in the opening ceremony for an Open Space Forum entitled “Lebanese Civil Society: Challenges and Opportunities”. Over the course of two days, leaders and activists from over sixty Lebanese non-governmental organizations from across the country will come together to share experiences and work on an action plan for civil society driven change in Lebanon. The forum is organized by the Middle East Partnership Initiative- Lebanon Alumni Association (MEPI-LAA), funded by the United States.
In his remarks, Ambassador Hale congratulated the attendees on their efforts to work together to strengthen Lebanese civil society, and highlighted recent positive developments in Lebanon as a result of the work of Lebanese activists. He noted that the United States shares the same goal as the forum’s participants, to see that Lebanon and the Lebanese people have a future where citizens, through civil society, cause positive change. Ambassador Hale encouraged attendees to take advantage of the forum as an opportunity to discuss the needs of their communities, and through dialogue, reinforce efforts to build a stronger and more united civil society.
